History

After the brand were split into two, the WWE decided to use its original WWE Tag-Team Championship and make it exclusive to the RAW brand. The official name now doesn't have the prefix attached to it. This also left the SmackDown! brand without Tag-Team titles so the decision was made to create the new WWE Tag-Team Championship which would be SmackDown! exclusive.

Facts and trivia

  • The team of Ax and Smash (Demolition) hold the record for the longest World Tag-Team title reign. They held the tag-team championship from March 27, 1988 to July 18, 1989. Approximately sixteen months.
  • Edge and Christian hold the record for the shortest championship reign. They held the titles for less than two hours

Current champions

The current champions are William Regal and Tajiri, in their first reign together. Regal and Tajiri won the championship on RAW on February 7, 2005 (taped on February 4, 2005) in Tokyo, Japan. They defeated La Résistance members Robert Conway and Sylvain Grenier. It is Regal's fourth time winning the championship while being the first time Tajiri has won the World Tag-Team Championship.
