The Score, launched in 1997, is a sports news television channel in Canada. It is available to over 5.4 million households and provides the scores of major sporting events 24/7 on a ticker, hence the name. The channel is wholly owned by Score Media, a new media company that is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX:SCR).
Sportscope
Originally launched as "Sportscope", it was a cable-based sports score network airing in seven Canadian provinces. Sportscope's content was a non-content based text format of sports scores and news. Sportscope was granted an English-Language specialty TV network license by the CRTC in 1996, and soon was seen by close to 2 million cable TV subscribers nationally. Sportscope was still an alphanumeric text service at this point.
Headline Sports
In May 1997, Sportscope was re-branded as "Headline Sports" - a national 24 hour anchor-at-desk sports news service operating on a rotating 15 minute newswheel of sports news scores. All programming contained a continuous bottom-section ticker of current sports scores.
The Score
In March 2000, Headline Sports' license was amended by the CRTC to allow live sports programming. The station was re-branded as "The Score". Not only was it the usual source for sports scores and news, it was now able to compete on a limited basis with Canadian sports stalwart TSN, and the then fledgling CTV Sportsnet . The Score promotes itself as a source to check the score of your favorite sport.
The Score's broadcasting headquarters is in Toronto, on the 3rd Floor of the Holiday Inn Hotel at 370 King Street West.
Programming
Some of the sports programming carried by The Score includes NBA and NCAA basketball (including some Toronto Raptors games), WWE SmackDown!, National Lacrosse Games, NCAA Football, Major League Baseball and harness racing.
Despite it's efforts in bringing in live sports programming, The Score is still well behind TSN and Sportsnet in ratings - mainly due to their limited budget, limited viewership and lack of coverage of major sporting events and brands. While they do carry MLB baseball games their matchups are usually of little interest to Canadian viewers (eg. Atlanta Braves vs. Los Angeles Dodgers). Toronto Blue Jays games are carried exclusively by TSN and Sportsnet.
Expo games where shown in 2004 before their move to the USA.
