The Hamptons

The Hamptons refers to a number of places near the East End of Long Island, in Suffolk County, New York. Parts of the Hamptons are well known for being a playground for the rich, and are frequented by residents of New York City during the summer months for weekend getaways. This has given rise to the terms "House in the Hamptons" or "Hamptons summer share."

The area of East Hampton is generally regarded as the most wealthy and exclusive, with notable celebrities and millionaires owning homes in the area.

Regardless of this popular idea of the Hamptons as a rich community, the Hamptons are home to a struggling working-and-lower-middle-class population, who are increasingly forced to move out due to the increasing cost of living, as well as the government's fear of allowing further development or affordable housing. Even in supposedly affluent East Hampton, there are large numbers of migrant workers from countries such as Colombia and Ecuador, who move there to take advantage of the construction industry spawned by the upper-class want of large houses.
