Opened on 9 March, 2000, as Colonial Stadium, its name was changed on 22 July, 2002 when the Telstra telecommunications carrier acquired the naming rights.

The stadium features both movable seating and a retractable roof. It can seat from 12,000 to 74,000 people depending on the type of event. The fixed seating number for Australian Football League matches is 53,399.
