TVN is also short for "TV Norge" (eng. TV Norway). It was one of the first two (second one being TV2) Norwegian commercial TV channels. Before these channels arose in the early 1980s, the only Norwegian TV channel was governmentally controlled NRK (Norsk Rikskringkasting); and most Norwegians could only receive this channel. In some urban areas it was also possible to receive swedish channels 1 and 2.
