Broadcast technical standards

Canada has adopted the NTSC and ATSC television transmission standards without any alterations. However, some unique local variations exist for DTH television due to transponder design variation in the Anik series of satellites.

Broadcast television networks

• CBC, or the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. National network broadcasting both in English and French (SRC).
• CTV, originally CTN (Canadian Television Network), an English national network.
  • MCTV (Mid-Canada Television)
  • ATV (Atlantic Television)
• Global, English network, national except for the territories and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Regional broadcast television systems

• CH, which consists of four local stations owned by Global.
• Citytv, independent, Toronto with a sister station in Vancouver. Part of the CHUM Television network.
  • A-Channel, prairie network which operates in Manitoba and Alberta. Formerly owned by Craig Media, and acquired by CHUM in December, 2004. The A-Channel stations will be rebranded as Citytv in September, 2005.
• NewNet, a group of six independent local stations (five in Ontario, one in B.C.) owned by CHUM. NewNet stations will be rebranded as A-Channel in September, 2005.
• TVA, Quebec-based private French-language network carried nationwide on cable.
• TQS, Quebec-based private French-language network.

• BBS, or the Baton Broadcasting System. Owned by Baton Broadcasting.

Conventional regional broadcast television stations

• CJON (NTV or Newfoundland Television) - a private television station in Newfoundland.
• CKXT (Toronto 1) - newest station in Toronto. Owned by TVA and Sun Media.

Educational regional broadcast television stations

• CFTU (Canal Savoir) - a Quebec-based commercial-free educational channel run by the Université de Montréal.
• CHLF (TFO) - French-language arm of TVOntario.
• CICA (TVOntario, also known as TVO) - operated by the government of Ontario.
• CIVM (Télé-Québec) - educational channel run by the Quebec government.
• CJAL (ACCESS) - Alberta-based educational station. CHUM-owned.
• CKNO (Knowledge Network) - educational channel based in Vancouver and run by the British Columbia government.

Multicultural regional broadcast television stations

• CJNT (CH Montreal) - multicultural station in Montreal branded as a CH station.
• CHNM (Channel M) - multicultural station in Vancouver.
• OMNI, a twinstick of multicultural television stations in Toronto owned by Rogers Communications.
  • CFMT (OMNI.1) - European, Latino and Caribbean programming.
  • CJMT (OMNI.2) - South-Asian, Oriental and African programming.

Religious regional broadcast television stations

• CHNU (NOWTV) - Christian-themed station in the Vancouver area.
  • Note: The launch of Winnipeg's CIIT in September 2004 will make NOWTV the newest television system in Canada.
• CITS (Crossroads Television System) - Ontario-based Christian station.
• CJIL (The Miracle Channel) - Alberta-based Christian station.

• Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), whose programming entirely focuses on shows dealing with or starring native people and Métis
