Gilbert, Arizona

Gilbert is a town located in Maricopa County, Arizona, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 109,697, but a July 1, 2003 Census estimate put the fast-growing suburb's population at 145,250. Gilbert was the fastest-growing incorporated place of over 100,000 people in the US from 1990 to 2000, as well as in the 2002 and 2003 Census estimates.

Geography


Gilbert is located at 33°20'40" North, 111°45'45" West (33.344439, -111.762411).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 111.9 km² (43.2 mi²). 111.3 km² (43.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 109,697 people, 35,405 households, and 28,925 families residing in the town. The population density is 985.9/km² (2,553.7/mi²). There are 37,007 housing units at an average density of 332.6/km² (861.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.73% White, 2.41% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 3.59% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 4.77% from other races, and 2.77% from two or more races. 11.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 35,405 households out of which 50.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.3% are non-families. 12.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the town the population is spread out with 34.2% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 37.8% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 3.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $68,032, and the median income for a family is $70,994. Males have a median income of $50,028 versus $32,381 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,795. 3.2% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
