Borås [bu'roːs] is a Municipality in Västra Götaland County, in western Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 915.2 km². Of the total population of 96,883, 47,047 are male, and 49,836 are female. The population density of the community is 106 inhabitants per km².
The city of Borås received its privileges in 1622 and has a total population reaching 60,790 (1996). The city has made itself famous for being the leading textile city of Sweden, starting as a location spot for textile mills and currently holds an unbeaten record in number of established mailorder firms. Borås is located at the point of two crossing railroads, among them the main railline between Gothenburg and Kalmar. The city is often considered to be the one city which gained most from the building of a nationwide railway system. Borås is also known for its zooloogical garden, Borås djurpark.
The most successful sports team is the football team IF Elfsborg, founded in 1904 but receiving its current name in 1906. The teams home arena is Ryavallen Stadium in Borås, with a capacity of 19,400 seated. Elfsborg play in black and yellow.
